History of L’eau de vie

L’eau de vie was first produced in France circa 1313 for medicinal purposes only. Physicians named the medication L’eau de vie – the water of life – because of the strengthening and sanitary powers they believed it possessed. Made from distilled wine, L’eau de vie replaced Portuguese fortified wine and helped to kick start the transatlantic slave trade by the 16th century. Generally consumed after dinner to aid digestion, L’eau de vie, also known as Brandy, is commonly used in the culinary world to deglaze, flamble and add flavor to traditional holiday cakes and drinks.
