History of Buffalo Trace Whiskey
Buffalo Trace Distillery, rooted in American whiskey heritage, has a compelling history that began in 1773. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, the distillery’s origins trace back to the pioneering efforts of Hancock Lee and his brother, Willis. Over the years, it changed hands and names several times, surviving Prohibition by obtaining a medicinal whiskey license.
The distillery gained its current name, Buffalo Trace, in 1999, paying homage to the ancient buffalo trails that crossed the Kentucky River near the site. Buffalo Trace stands as one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States, a testament to its resilience and commitment to tradition.
Known for producing a wide range of whiskies, Buffalo Trace has earned acclaim for its flagship bourbon. The bourbon, characterized by its rich and complex flavor profile, is aged in new oak barrels, offering notes of vanilla, caramel, and a hint of spice. Buffalo Trace Bourbon has become synonymous with quality, winning numerous awards for its craftsmanship.
The distillery also produces other iconic brands like Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, and Pappy Van Winkle, each contributing to its reputation for exceptional bourbon. The antique firehouse-turned-visitor center and the iconic buffalo symbolize the distillery’s commitment to preserving history while embracing innovation.
From its early days in the tumultuous years of American history to its current status as a revered bourbon producer, Buffalo Trace Distillery stands as a symbol of enduring craftsmanship. Enjoyed by whiskey connoisseurs globally, Buffalo Trace’s history unfolds with each sip, telling a tale of tradition, innovation, and the spirit of the American frontier.
